How was a random car able to go down Liverpool’s Water Street causing such chaos?

Liverpool’s Mayor has said ‘big questions’ remain over how a car managed to smash into a crowd of Liverpool fans, leaving dozens injured.

The crash triggered a ‘cesspit’ of ‘hate’ and misinformation on social media, Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram added in remarks to reporters this morning.

Twenty seven people, including two children, were taken to hospital last night after the ‘horror’ incident in Water Street, where 800,000 fans had gathered to celebrate the Premier League team’s trophy parade.

Rotheram said Water Street was supposed to be ‘blocked off’ to cars and the ‘big question’ was how the incident was able to happen.

The mayor went on to praise Merseyside Police’s decision to release details of the 53-year-old white British driver arrested at the scene.

‘I think the police acted, not just appropriately, but very, very quickly, to dampen that sort of speculation because it was designed to inflame,’ he said.

‘It was designed to divide. The message of hate doesn’t go down well here.’

Officers said the ‘isolated’ incident was not being treated as terrorism.

The Prime Minister said he had spoken to Mr Rotheram about the incident, adding: ‘Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror.’
