href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/germany\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Germany<\/a> surrendered, ending World War II in <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/europe-travel\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Europe<\/a>, days after <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/adolf-hitler\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Adolf Hitler<\/a> killed himself to escape justice.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3.5 million British men and women helped make that happen by serving in the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/british-army\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">British Army<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of those, fewer than 70,000 people are still alive. Less than 3 million Brits were alive on VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) on May 8, 1945. Even fewer will remember it.<\/p>\n<p>Time is running out to save their stories. If we don’t document them now, their memories will die with them.<\/p>\n<p>Without them, we will lose a precious part of the story of how Britain and its allies defeated Nazism, ended the Holocaust and made peace possible after years of bloodshed.<\/p>\n<p>This is where you – Metro’s readers – can help. The Cenotaph will be decorated with Union Jacks and street parties will be held across the country.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tuesday, May 6<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ceramic poppies will be installed to ‘resemble a \u201cwound\u201d at the heart’ of the Tower of London, while landmarks around the country will be lit up.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wednesday, May 7<\/h2>\n<p>The Parliament Choir will host a concert at Westminster Hall in the Houses of Parliament.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thursday, May 8<\/h2>\n<p>A service at Westminster Abbey will serve as both \u2018an act of shared remembrance and a celebration of the end of the war\u2019.
